mens health A broken heart God will not despise.
Games of God and Men was so much fun to read that when I reached the last page I wanted the next book to start on. Combined with plenty of action and excitement is a clear message, that we must be faithful and obedient, listen to the Lord, and let Him handle our problems, a message with a ring of truth. Troubles come thick and fast when characters are doing their duty and being obedient. The world says to stand up for ourselves, but Jesus said "Blessed are the poor in spirit." Games of God and Men has a tremendous amount of biblical living in it. The battles are fought in the heart, where God prepares us for the task He has assigned us. The title is most apt; everyone is playing games; God is molding us to be useable. This is fantasy at its best, an imaginary kingdom with human characters confronting elemental problems of pretense, greed, arrogance, and lust for power. At the same time it is a mystery/detective story in a race to see who can discover Twomey's identity first and use that knowledge to his/her advantage. I'm eager to read the book again soon.

mens health Let the Games Begin!
Robin Hardy's newest entry in the Latter Annals of Lystra is an engaging read. Ares' twin daughters are growing up and getting into more mischief than ever, mischief with serious consequences for those trying to protect them. Meanwhile, the royal court is still a treacherous place where the games aren't always just for fun.

What is most intriguing is the overarching storyline of the series as a whole. I'm looking forward to the final three books and seeing how everything works together. I love these characters.

More, please.

mens health Games? Or Divine Strategy...?
"My personal trials have also taught me the value of unmerited suffering. As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation: either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course. Recognizing the necessity for suffering I have tried to make of it virtue. If only to save myself from bitterness, I have attempted to see my personal ordeals as an opportunity to transfigure myself and heal the people involved in the tragic situation which now obtains. I have lived these last few years with the conviction that unearned suffering is redemptive." (Can be found in A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.)

And so we see this play out in Games, as we can only see the Great Plan after many years. This sixth book in the inimitable Latter Annals demonstrates how the series is really just picking up steam.

In this episode, we see the obediences (and in some cases, the disobediences) of the first generation playing out into the lives of the second generation. Consequences of the choices of Ares, Nicole, Renee, and others begin to see light in the lives of Sophie, Bonnie and Henry. Most poignant at this stage, however, is the interplay between Ares, the rightfully reinstated Surchatain, and the usurper's grandson who was mercifully spared his life.

In twists and turns that are trademark Hardy style, the plot takes us deeper into the struggles of Faith in the faithful. What to do when one has done all he can to obey God, and still Fate seems to be making sport of him? In a raw examination of some unfortunate circumstances that arise in the lives of key Lystrans, we see a conclusion that begins to awe the reader. The stage has been set in the first five books; now the players are moving into place to demonstrate the awe-inspiring work of Mercy that requires great sacrifice, and offers a greater reward.

Readers can welcome this return to Lystra: While the conclusion of Games is satisfying, readers will be left on the edges of their seats waiting for the final three installments in the series. Knowing Hardy, however, it will be worth the wait. Highly recommended.
