Well written and researched As a former RB66C crewmember (EWO) at Shaw(9TRS)/Takhli(41TRS) from April 1963 until July 1966 I participated in/with or have knowledge of many of the events and people from that period as described by Colonel Samuel in this wonderful book. The book is extremely well documented and illustrated and the narrative tracks perfectly with events as I recall them including enough of the associated color to make it a lively and entertaining read. Particularly fascinating to me was the detailed early history of the aircraft's development much of which I learned here for the first time. An aside: before I bought the book it was brought to my attention that I appear in the upper cover picture (2nd from right end) which was taken at Larson AFB, WA in May 1963 during exercise Coulee Crest.
Excellent History of an Overlooked Airplane Wolf pulls no punches in regards to the Air Staff's apathetic attitude to the development and deployment of the B-66, as well as to the dedication to duty of the flyers and ground support crews who transformed it from an underpowered afterthought into an effective war fighting machine. He also articulates the feelings of most crew members towards the incompetence of their superiors that caused unnecessary loss of life during the Vietnam War. This is a valuable addition to the Air Force story that would never be told thru official channels. Recommend it highly.
The Definitive Book on the B-66 Series Written by a former RB-47 and EB-66 "Raven",this work covers all of the variants of the Air Force's B-66 Destroyer series and features detailed descriptions of their operations and the men who flew them. '50s ops in Japan and Europe are covered in detail, but about half of the 400+ pages concern the EW missions they conducted in South East Asia. While the Thuds and Phantoms typically get the lion's share of ink in USAF Vietnam books, the EB-66 deserves no small amount of credit for the valiant work the type and its aircrew accomplished in theater. This effort succeeds in that regard by covering the somewhat convoluted development of the type and doesn't hide the warts, the lackluster J-71 engines it was stuck with getting a deserved amount of scorn. Presentation is largely text with some pictures, all B&W, many of which are obviously from the personal collections of Destroyer aircrew. Heavily footnoted and with appendicies covering airframe losses, specifications, squadrons and other valuable reference data. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Cold War USAF, the air war in Vietnam or electronic warfare.
Amazing Destroyer Aircraft and its People A marvel of research into the lives of courageous men and their unarmed aircraft. There is much glory in the Air Force flying machines and its brave men. This story is about one of them, but one that excels. It does so by virtue of the tremendous courage displayed in every mission by the crews that flew armed, not with guns and other weapons, but with guts and determination. Flying at risk in cold war missions and later in combat, their goal simply to provide safety for other aircraft and crews. They endured the dangers of flying in combat areas in which they became a target so that other brave men could complete their own dangerous missions and return safely home even if they themselves did not. While operating from less than desirable facilities all over the combat zones, imagine the awesome burden of bearing the risk of every demanding mission, up there alone, without even a pea-shooter for defense against enemy aircraft and ground anti-aircraft firings of canon and missiles. Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, a veteran of combat missions aboard these aircraft is also a master at writing engrossing stories of fact and a tenacious researcher who will spare no efforts to gain the details that such an endeavor deserves. This is another Jewel and more: It does justice to the B-66 and all its models and to the men that flew them and maintained them.
Glory Days A fantastic book on the Douglas Destroyer EB/RB/WB/B-66 that possibly will become the ENCYCLOPEDIA reference of all time. Details galore with references that none other has ever done. A project of this magnatude was well researched and thought out, before applied in print. Extremely well done!
