If you believe that love exists for you, you'll find the power to manifest your dreams." ~ John Gray If you have read most of John Gray's books (as I recently have) then you will recognize many of his main ideas in this book. Since it takes a lot of work to maintain a loving relationship, the daily readings are a reminder to make love and romance a priority. John Gray discusses unconditional love, sexuality, innate differences, communications styles, compatibility, common problems, romance, monogamy and polarity. While most of the topics are perfect for anyone in a committed monogamous relationship, there are a few tips on dating. It did seem strange to read about dating and divorce in a book mostly about nurturing couples who are married and trying to make their marriage work. Throughout this book John Gray keeps talking about "advanced relationship skills." Eventually he gets to a few explanations but it is better to read up on his ideas in Mars and Venus in the Bedroom: Guide to Lasting Romance and Passion, A. One of the confusing issues discusses is how men shouldn't share feelings (Sept 3) but women should. A few pages later (Sept 22) there is a section about how women should encourage sharing. Which is it? Logic would seem to indicate that if someone has feelings to share they should be listened to with an added level of respect. Sept 3 - "...if his feelings are hurt, or if he feels more emotionally needy, he should talk with men friends and not look to her primarily to support his need to talk and share feelings. Sept 22 - "Men have a feminine side and from time to time need to share their thoughts and emotions to feel better. When this happens, a woman can easily shut a man down. All it takes is a few such experiences, and he will stop sharing what he needs to share." One of the things I find interesting about John Gray's books is that he never seems to offer practical solutions like hiring a housekeeper or bringing home takeout. It seems like he mostly focuses on communication although some of the real issues could be solved quite easily if both partners stopped trying to do everything. As someone who cleans houses myself I can say that it makes couples especially happy to know that they can now spend time with each other since there is nothing left to clean or worry about. Why nag someone when you can just hire help? While reading this book gives you some basic information, I can highly recommend reading the following books to fill in the pieces of the John Gray puzzle: Why Mars and Venus Collide: Improving Relationships by Understanding How Men and Women Cope Differently with Stress Mars and Venus Together Forever: A Practical Guide to Creating Lasting Intimacy MEN ARE FROM MARS WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS ~The Rebecca Review Cleaning by Day, Reading by Night  Ohhhh boy...Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. There is a lot of truth in it. The book helps to understand how different we are, men need their 'caves' to escape and think, women need to talk, express their feeling and be romanced. Without the romance, appreciation of one another any relationship is going to run out of passion. The book says more of relationships and marriage, there is a lot of repeats of the same things. Not much on first dating or and start of a new relationship.  Glad I didn't buy my own copy.Very disappointing. I don't think the things mentioned in this book are so generically applicable. I read it for an hour and left it, unimpressed. It gives the feeling that the author has a specific male and female individual (or bunch of individuals) in mind, and carries on with that image. YOung marriagesUsually the first few chapter discourage me or encourage me to continue reading, I have in fact read on. I have seen many communication problem's in everyday life; people are misunderstanding the other other people around them. Simple because they are only interested in theirself. I find this book a caluable asset to my relationships. I will be purchasing this book for my sister and brother in law. A wonderfull christmas gift for anyone in a relationship.  Helpful each day of the year.I love this book. While his other books give a great overview, this one is wonderful because it is broken down into a little information each day. As I read, I am reminded of the changes I first made when I read, "Men Are From Mars..." and this book helps me to keep those changes in the forefront of my mind. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoyed and learned from, "Men are from Mars..." and the other books in the series. |
